I am thrilled to be teaching 9th & 10th grade GT/Pre-AP Language Arts at Carroll High School! We are embarking on a quest this year as we travel through a deserted island with a bunch of shipped wrecked young boys in The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, on to Alabama where we will look at small town life, racial strife and southern traditions through the eyes of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, then onto Odysseus’ journey through life in The Odyssey by Homer, Shakespeare’s take on the conquests of Julius Caesar, Sophocles’ tale of intrique as Antigone tries to bury her brother, a challenge taken on by the brave Sir Gawain in Sir Gawain and The Green Knight written by a fourteenth century poet whose name is a mystery, the Bundren’s family odyssey to bury their wife and mother in William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying, a tale of man’s struggle with mother nature in Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea and hopefully, we’ll get to Truman Capote’s own quest to document a murder investigation that shocked and mesmerized the world… In Cold Blood. These works of literature are classic and timeless and I hope they will catipult you into thinking about the world around you and your own odyssey through life.
As Alicia Keys says in her song, “Diaries”, “Come on and take this journey with me.”
It’s going to be a great year!
